(Almost) 1 Million Views! 🎉 Hong Kong’s 2024 YouTube Music Night have now reached over 800,000 views!
From working with local stars like Jay Fung to filming international artists like Gyubin and Crash Adams, every show has been a chance to create something special. While there were similarities between our camera/lighting/sound for each show, we had to think of creative ways to overcome factors like weather (was pouring in our second show) and instrument setups.
EuCan Productions was in charge:
If you’re curious about what it was like to put on shows like these from a video/sound point of view, here are a few key takeaways:
1️⃣ Light Your Music: Sync your lighting to the songs in the setlist. When the bass drops, the lights should drop with it too! It’s all about bringing the music to life with contrast: with colors, light & darkness, spatial lighting. We even produced YouTube Music LED Wristbands!
2️⃣ Plan your shots: Always lock in 3 safety angles (your A, B, and C cams), but don’t be afraid to get creative with other cameras for dynamic shots. Oh, and hardwire your setup - you don’t want to lose a connection mid-show.
3️⃣ Take care of your ears: Whether it’s earplugs or in-ear monitors, don’t forget to protect your team’s hearing.
4️⃣ Record the stems: Always record the raw audio stems instead of just the house mix. This gives the artist’s team more options for editing later.
5️⃣ Use Comms: Use headsets to stay connected with your crew and different departments. This is key for timing lighting cues, coordinating when to bring in talent, and nailing those specialty shots at just the right moment.
A 2-hour outdoor show like this takes over a month of planning/coordinating, backup/contingency plans and an entire day of setting up.
One of the best parts of working on YouTube Music Night, for me, has been discovering new artists and songs.
Here are a few tracks that I'm still looping:
In The End - Oliver Cronin
Special - Gyubin
在愛面前投降 - Jay Fung
Optimist - Crash Adams
What If I - DENA
